Cooters, Brew-Thrus and Kudzu

Play

BrewThruSmlIt’s my birthday this week! As if to celebrate, Beth gets in touch from Virginia and gives us a list of southern terms that we gleefully dissect (among them is the establishment pictured on the right.)  Later, comedian Adam Hess calls in to chat about east coast weddings, trains and bad live-action Disney movies. Then he takes the quiz, and tries to guess the meaning of the word “preppy,” while Johnson ponders a “bedsit.”

  1. Wow! Love the show. Glad I could contribute. First, my apologies for not remembering the more generic definition of “cooter” which you obviously knew. That one escaped me. No, the Southern definition I was referring to is, a term of endearment – like sugar, sweetie, darlin’. It is common for children to be called “cooter” (or in our house the shortened form “coots”). I grew up watching The Dukes of Hazard and assumed it was common knowledge that the character Cooter was called so because he was so dear and lovable. (Wasn’t he?)
Second, Brew-Thru is not so new. I’ve known of it since at least 1980. It’s an Institution at the beaches of the Carolinas. (Hence the surfboard.) If you’re ever in that neck of the woods, hit it! We all do.
As always, looking forward to next Thursday.
PS, I’m a bit disappointed you did not pick up on my “bless his little heart” slam on Paul. Guess it’s a Southern thing.

  2. Thanks for clearing that up, coots (still doesn’t sound right.) And I suppose it makes more sense that you might hit a brew-thru on your way to the beach, except we’re not allowed beer on the beach in California (don’t get me started.) As for blessing Paul’s heart, I wasn’t 100% sure if it was a slam or not, but now I know, I’ll pat his head for you next time I see him. Thanks again for giving us a great show!

  3. Loved the podcast, as usual..i was quite impressed with Adam’s knowledge of American TV..lol..we have something similar to the Brew-Thru in Houston..it’s called Beverage Barn..same concept. There’s also a place with a drive thru window called the Eskimo Hut, where you can all kinds of wacky flavored of daiquiris. Good stuff, indeed. 🙂
