Happy Birthday, America

4thfireworks1Our July 4th episode! We talk about Johnson’s trip, cats, how British people feel about July 4, how different America might (or might not) have been without the revolutionary war, and all the usual hot dog and firework stuff. Later, Sam calls in to take the quiz, and tries to guess what a “roach coach” is; Johnson tries to figure out what “barmy” means.

  1. Been a while, blokes. I guess you missed my picking on you. Was ready to go on the Amish, supposedly being dutch, but James beat me to it – by the way,is van Leer dutch or deutsch in origin? Met an amzaing older Amish couple
some years ago when we took an Amtrak train from Chicgao to L.A. for 2 days to see the west with the kids. They had 37 kids and grandkids, they were on their way to an aloe vera convention, the growing of which was their business. Tried speaking German to them, but theirs is a dialect literally from the 18th century,
so we had to resort to American.
You spoke about the difference in habits and customs. Once my wife was helping some US business people just newly moved to our country. They were wondering if their neighbours hated them, because nobody came over with food. Here it is the other way around, you have to invite the neighbours to introduce yourself. The take on privacy is really different, I guess we are more like the Brits in that way.
Same with personal distance, when I have been away from the US longer,
I always feel like people at in my face and in addition shouting at he top of their lungs, especially in restaurants. Well, may be not all of htem.
You should do a show on phrases: What does ” I’m on the wagon” and “I have sand in my shoes” mean?
Last but not least, you failed to mention the great 4th of July parades or do they only have them on the East coast?
And – do you have to be a British or American to take the quizz or does living on
this side of the Atlantic qualify?

  2. Thanks, Jochen. Yup, we’ve missed you. Good stuff here, will address it on a future show; I’m out of town next week so not sure what I’m going to do show-wise. Too early for a clip show?
