Conkers!

Play

In our very first episode, we discuss whose Dennis The Menace is better, how Americans don’t know what Pass The Parcel is, food mishaps, and what happens (or doesn’t) when you change Sirie’s accent on your iPhone. We also finally put the “Alumin(i)um” debate to rest and later, Martin Pond calls in from the northeast corner of his bed to play “That’s Not English” – the only quiz that lets you discover what the yanks call a lilo, what the brits call a ghetto blaster, and that explaining the rules of the game “Conkers” makes people giggle a lot. Email or tweet us with your stories! In-studio guest: Paul Johnson.

  1. Fascinating and entertaining concept. How about photos of the host and guests (maybe not in bed), so we can prejudge the validity of the dialog? (hah!)
Also a few years ago an American coworker (architect) who was working in London wrote a hilarious piece on a comparison of British and American construction terminology. Not everyone would find it amusing, but I wish I could find it. It was a classic.

  2. I wanted to be part of the conversation and have had the same conversation points when I worked in the same place with James, a lot of laughter when you work isn’t always good for the employer ; )
James is only a few years older than me and we could talk about TV we both watched as kids in the UK (I’m from the North West of England near Liverpool) a question asked – do you remember the cartoon ‘Captain Pugwash’ and his first mate Master Bates?! Tee Hee! These are REAL characters in a childrens show, not porn! Also to follow the thread of the podcast I’d never heard of an English Muffin until I came to live in America!?! Anyway great job James ; )

  3. Brilliant! This just made my day. Paul’s “anal beads” comment on Conkers brought tears to my eyes. Really funny stuff. Can’t wait for the next one.

  4. Absolute Genius! Thank you, James (and Paul) for this editorial gem, which I know is the first of many more to come.

Here’s a quote you can use for your print ads:
“Brilliant! 20 years in the making. Paul is to James, and Karl is to Ricky” – Greg Fiore
(just be sure not to horizontal scale the attribute).

  5. Totally brilliant, Darling …… except that In my defence I do NOT speak like Dame Edna, who is actually from Australia! More of a cross between Judy Dench and Helen Mirren, with a touch of Her Majesty thrown in? Which reminds me – I was asked by someone while there if I knew The Queen. I answered “Not personally, but she has waved to me a few times”.

Yes – I remember well that bizarre conversation with the guy in the Saga Hotel reception……. he gazed at me in bewilderment when I asked for “leaflets”. After a while he said “Geez – I have no idea what you are saying, but it sure sounds pretty!!”

And I did learn that when buying a handbag one should ask for a purse, and if wanting a purse, ask for a pocket book….. which makes absolutely NO sense to me!

Looking forward very much to the next instalment – which word this American iPad keeps trying to spell with double “L”…….. PVL xx

  6. I was expecting to tune in and hear some car crash radio but I was very disappointed.

The program was very professional and well polished and I was pleasantly entertained and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nuff respect, mate, I’m proud of you.

Having said that, the host was a complete wanker and I think if you get rid of him then you are on to a winner.

I’ll be tuning in next week with the anticipation of hearing you die on your arse.

    Peace.

  7. I’m on week 9 or 10 now and have thoroughly enjoyed every episode. I can relate to all you have discussed and have bust out laughing on several occasions while out walking and have received a few funny looks. I realized today as I was out walking that I have a massive smile on my face as I listen to you and Paul. I am recommending this show to a bunch of English, Scottish AND Australian friends who live here in the US. Keep up the excellent work! BTW when we were young I never got to see this side of you. I love the interaction between you and the family. Just incase you haven’t realized I am Helen’s sister. The Aunty to one of your nephews and niece.

  8. Thanks, Hazel. Of course I knew who you were! Looks like you moved from NY to MD? Glad you’re enjoying the show, and thanks for the recommendations – we need all the listeners we can get! Love to Jeff and the kids – JBVL x
